Range Safety Officer

Become a Range Safety Officer. The Range Safety Officer is responsible for overseeing line operation and ensuring safety during shooting events. The RSO candidate must be an experienced shooter.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

  • Range Safety Officer roles and responsibilities

  • Range standard operating procedures

  • Range inspection and range rules

  • Firearm stoppages and malfunctions

  • Range Safety Briefings which include procedures to follow in the case of an emergency.

PREREQUISITES: Candidates for NRA Range Safety Officers should be experienced shooters, involved in many aspects of target shooting, training, and range supervision.

FIREARM & AMMUNITION REQUIREMENTS: None, this is not a shooting course.

WHAT TO BRING: The range is outdoors with access to cover.

  • Ear & eye protection

  • Brimmed hat

  • High collared shirt

  • Water & snacks for the classroom

  • Lunch for in the classroom

  • Sun, wind & rain protection

  • Clothing layers for sun and weather protection on the range, appropriate footwear.

Chief range safety officer

The CRSO candidate must be a current NRA Instructor. This 14-hour course is presented in two parts: Basic Instructor Training and NRA Chief Range Safety Officer training (CRSO).

WHAT TO EXPECT:

  • Inspections

  • Emergency procedures

  • Firearm stoppages and malfunctions

  • Safety briefings

  • Students must demonstrate organizational and teaching skills via participation in practical exercises and complete an open book exam. Once the course is completed the RSO will be upgraded to a NRA Chief Range Safety Officer.
